Many Russian herds now meet international standards for genetic potential thanks to the implementation of breeding programs and the use of high-potential bulls. However, many breeding farms continue to operate using outdated methods, which reduces the potential of future offspring. New approaches and the use of modern breeding technologies are needed.
The key objectives are to establish a network of breeding sites, work with embryos, and develop highly genetically advanced groups. Without government support, it will be difficult to implement large-scale projects. Successful development of domestic genetic material requires significant financial investment and a comprehensive government program.
The economic benefits of modern breeding technologies are evident in the significant increase in MILK production. A comparison of the results shows that high-quality semen pays for itself much more quickly than traditional reproduction methods.
In the next 5–6 years, a significant improvement in the level of Russian genetics is possible, but complete import substitution may take 10–15 years.
