Since July 17 this year, the price on the French market for slaughter pigs has remained virtually unchanged, being at the level of €2.353 euro/kg carcass. After 14 July, the National Day in France, there has been a decline in demand for market pigs from some slaughter and processing companies.

We all know that over the past two years the European pig industry has suffered significant losses: very high feed prices, rising energy prices, low profitability in the pig industry. According to the latest data, less than 900,000 sows are currently involved in production in France (20 years ago there were more than 1,200,000 sows in the country).

Some French entities argue in favor of a price of €3 euro/kg carcass… how seriously can this be discussed in the inflationary European market, and especially without segmenting our market, continuing to produce the same poor-tasting pork ?

In France, as in many other countries of the world, the market is shrinking. The number of players and the number of manufacturers is decreasing. According to the latest data, the second largest cooperative specializing in pig production is beginning to converge with another large French cooperative that is not only engaged in pig production, but also owns many meat processing plants and several developed value-added brands.

Consolidation is also noted in the pig breeding sector, where one of the main French players in this market acquires another French company for the production of pig genetics.

The French pig industry continues to shrink. Perhaps now is the time to start looking for profit and value-added product production, instead of chasing the lowest cost of production.
