The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) warns against rising food prices due to the VAT hike.

The agency emphasized that the preferential 10% rate will remain in effect for such goods. A corresponding warning was sent to major retail chains, including Magnit, X5 (Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, and others), Auchan, O'Key, Lenta, and many others. The FAS emphasized the inadmissibility of unjustified price increases for both food and non-food products and stated its readiness to take action in the event of violations. The law raising the tax rate will take effect on January 1, 2026. Some manufacturers have already notified chains of their intention to raise prices due to the VAT increase. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed hope that this decision will be temporary, expecting the VAT increase to generate approximately 4.42 trillion rubles for the federal budget over three years.
