EFSA expands ASF campaign

Last summer, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) launched a major campaign to raise awareness of ASF in South East Europe. The campaign was carried out in partnership with local authorities in countries in the "problem region" - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia - due to their proximity to countries where ASF is prevalent in present time.

EFSA is currently expanding the campaign, primarily targeting Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Estonia, Hungary and Romania. “As a scientific organization, we work tirelessly to develop assessments and recommendations that can help countries threatened by African swine fever protect their animals and their economies. Last year we decided to put our science into the field and demonstrate EFSA's commitment to helping farmers and others living in the shadow of this terrible disease. The campaign was well received in the countries of the first wave, and now we are moving on. The campaign complements ongoing efforts by the European Commission and other international organizations to eradicate the disease in Europe,” says Nikolaus Kriz, HEAD of Animal and Plant HEALTH at EFSA.

The campaign aims to increase awareness and understanding of ASF in all 18 countries and targets groups of people and individuals who come into contact with domestic pigs and wild boars, especially pig farmers. The campaign is carried out with the participation and assistance of local veterinary organizations, farmers' groups, hunting associations, border police and other relevant authorities.

Since mid-July, Germany has been added to the list of countries facing ASF cases on commercial farms.

And this fact will be taken into account when preparing the monthly analytical report Meatinfo.ru
