The scientific community is actively looking for ways to reduce the use of antibiotics in poultry farming to avoid the problem of resistance. New research by scientists from the Poultry Disease Laboratory of the National University of Colombia (UNAL), the results of which were reviewed by sfera.fm, showed that oregano can be an effective alternative to antibiotics in protecting chickens from salmonellosis.
To conduct the experiment , scientists used three different mixtures. Blend EUB1 contained only oregano essential oils, blend EUB2 included oregano and organic acids, and blend EUB3 additionally contained beta-glucans. 40 laying hens were infected with a field strain of S. gallinarum and divided into experimental groups. Bird observation lasted 10 weeks.
As a result, adding oregano to chicken diets reduced the risk of salmonellosis by more than 61%. In addition, birds on this diet also showed improved performance, egg production and feed conversion. Thus, oregano affects not only the HEALTH of the bird, but also productivity indicators.
