There were 127 farm bankruptcy filings last year, up 535% from the year before, according to Serasa data released Thursday.
Most of the requests for creditor protection came from soybean producers, although cattle ranchers and coffee farmers also sought to remain creditors and reorganize their businesses , Serasa said, citing satellite sensing data.
“In perspective, the number of bankruptcy filings appears small compared to the millions of people employed in agriculture,” said Marcelo Pimenta, Serasa’s HEAD of agribusiness. “But the rate at which these requests are growing quarter after quarter is concerning.”
Brazilian grain traders are increasingly speaking out on the issue as a rise in farmer bankruptcy cases could impact the supply of promised produce and hamper traders' ability to fulfill EXPORT programs.
“Historically, the big problem in Brazil is how to finance agricultural production,” said Paulo Souza, CEO of US grain trader Cargill in Brazil, speaking at an event this week. “There has been a wave of bankruptcy filings in agriculture recently... and this is causing great concern in the sector.”
Serasa's Pimenta cited climate issues, which have led to crop failures in several regions and exacerbated farm management problems, as the driving force behind farmer bankruptcies.
He also said lower commodity prices had squeezed farmers' profits amid still-high interest rates in Brazil.
