Chile: Pork production and exports to recover in 2023

In 2023, 5,476,066 pigs were slaughtered, up 0.2% from the 5,464,593 pigs slaughtered in 2022. Pork production increased 1.1% from 2022, increasing from 576,402 to 582,652 tonnes (t).

At the regional level, 90.4% of pork production in 2023 was concentrated in O'Higgins, whose production volume reached 526,705 tonnes - an increase of 2.3% compared to 2022. Likewise, the Maule and Valparaiso regions showed positive growth rates of 8.4% and 11.5%, respectively.

The regions with the largest decrease in pork production were Metropolitana de Santiago (-57.3%), Los Lagos (-40.7%) and Aysen del Grall. Carlos Ibáñez del Campo (-27.7%).

The import volume reached 108,227 t, representing an increase of 5.1% compared to 2022, and the import value reached US $275.8 million CIF, 14.4% higher than the 2022 total (US$241.1 million CIF).

Exports increased by 13% compared to the previous year, from 234,751 tons to 265,238 tons, and amounted to usd 697.7 million, exceeding the 2022 value by 12.3%.

Apparent consumption was 425,641 t, down 4.3% from 2022 (444,650 t), while per capita consumption was estimated at around 21 kg per inhabitant.

The share of domestic production in total apparent consumption increased from 76.8% in 2022 to 74.6% in 2023, while the share of imports increased from 23.2% to 25.4%.
