According to the latest data from Rosstat, as of May 27, 2022, when compared with the values of a week and a month ago, food prices by type in Russia as a whole continue to strengthen.
One of the most significant and positive trends of the week is the fact that the growth rate of retail food prices is gradually slowing down. We also note that some food products, which previously showed a significant increase in prices, "rolled back in price."
The AB-Center analyzed the weekly dynamics of prices for 44 products, of which fourteen products decreased during the week, and nine products decreased during the month.
Weekly food price change
Price growth leaders (TOP-5) for the week
According to AB-Center's calculations, to a greater extent, the increase in prices over the week affected such food products as potatoes (+2.6%), soft candies glazed with chocolate (+1.3%), dry milk formulas for baby food (+1 .0%), onions (+1.0%) and apples (+0.8%).
The increase in apple prices is largely due to a reduction in import supplies, as well as high purchase prices for imported products that entered the market in March-early April. In addition, in the spring, there is a slight reduction in stocks of domestic products.

On the reasons for the decline in prices for certain food products
The fall in cabbage prices, according to AB-Center, is largely due to the seasonal expansion of supplies from abroad.
The cost of eggs decreases due to seasonal factors (increase in supply in spring and summer).
Seasonal factors also contribute to the decline in prices for tomatoes: an increase in the supply of greenhouse products.
Cucumbers for the week and for the month also decreased in price for the same reason. In general, over the past three months, prices for cucumbers sank by 42.6%.
Agricultural production increased by 2.3% in four months
The cost of granulated sugar during the month is gradually decreasing due to a decrease in demand. Earlier in February-March, rush demand led to higher prices. Now, those groups of the population that at that time bought sugar in volumes that significantly exceeded current needs, had a high level of stocks of this product. Demand from such households fell almost to zero in May.
