UK government approves temporary visas for 1,000 slaughterhouse workers

As of October 15, 6,000 pigs are in the yards of slaughterhouses due to lack of space, according to the National Pig Breeders Association of Great Britain. According to the Association's estimates, 120,000 animals should be delivered to meat processing plants in the near future. Approximately 10,000 pigs are slaughtered per week.

The UK government is moving to reduce restrictions on foreign workers. In particular, the requirement for advanced knowledge of the English language has been temporarily removed.

The UK is also addressing bottlenecks with special visas for truck drivers and poultry workers, according to the Department of Agriculture.

The country is short of about 100,000 truck drivers, according to the road transportation industry association. Supermarket shelves and gas stations have been empty lately. Ports are filled with containers due to lack of drivers. Container ships are idle in some ports.
