The animal protein sector has started 2025 with growth momentum. According to data published in a quarterly study by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), cattle , pig and chicken slaughter increased in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2024 , reflecting increased domestic demand and positive EXPORT dynamics.
In the first quarter of 2025, 9.71 million cattle were slaughtered in Brazil, with official sanitary controls carried out. This is an increase of 3.8% compared to the same period in 2024 and an increase of 1.5% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. The volume of beef carcasses reached 2.45 million tons, an increase of 1.6% year-on-year, although it is down 2% compared to the last quarter of 2024.
The results confirm a gradual recovery in beef cattle production after a period of price pressure and adjustments in the livestock cycle.
The Brazilian pig industry slaughtered 14.25 million heads, up 1.4% compared to the first quarter of 2024. The volume of carcasses reached 1.31 million tons, up 1.9% compared to the same period last year. However, compared to the previous quarter, there was stability: the number of animals slaughtered decreased by 0.2%, while carcass production increased by 0.2%.
The poultry industry continues to expand. In the first three months of 2025, 1.63 billion chickens were slaughtered in the country, up 2.3% year-on-year and 0.9% quarter-on-quarter. The total carcass weight was 3.45 million tons, up 2.3% year-on-year and 2.6% year-on-year.
The total volume of raw MILK purchased by organizations subject to sanitary supervision in the first quarter of 2025 amounted to 6.48 billion liters. The volume increased by 3.1% compared to the same period in 2024. However, compared to the previous quarter, there was a decrease of 4.5%, which is due to the off-season in some regions and still high costs for the producer.
Between January and March 2025, Brazilian tanneries purchased 10.08 million whole bovine hides, up 8.4% from the first quarter of 2024 and 1.3% from the fourth quarter of last year. Positive data were obtained in the leather and footwear sector, which is directly dependent on supplies from livestock.
Chicken egg production for the quarter reached 1.16 billion dozen, up 5.6% from the first quarter of 2024. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2024, there was a decrease of 3.2%, which is a normal seasonal phenomenon at the beginning of the year.
