Brazil: Tariff cuts expected to boost pork trade with South Korea

The exemption applies to a 10,000-ton quota of frozen pork (excluding brisket) for Asian destinations. Previously, the tariff was 25% of the total value of the goods.

SOUTH KOREA is currently the 16th largest EXPORT destination for Brazilian pork, importing 3,700 tons in the first quarter of this year.

"The establishment of a duty-free quota is an important sign of progress made by the Ministry of Agriculture in Brazilian pork exports to South Korea. This is especially relevant given the ongoing negotiations between Minister Carlos Favaro and his Secretaries of International Relations and Agricultural Defense to recognize Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and other Brazilian states as free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination," explains ABPA President Ricardo Santin. Currently, only the state of Santa Catarina is authorized to supply pork to the South Korean market, as it is the only state with such a recognized HEALTH status.

South Korea , with a per capita consumption of approximately 29 kg, is the fourth-largest pork importer in the world. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the country imported 785,000 tons in 2024 .
