Bank predicted the future of the canned meat market in Russia

Production of canned meat in 2020 increased by more than 10%. But in the future the canned meat market will develop not due to growth in volume, but due to a change in the quality composition, experts believe.

 

 

 

The canned meat market will develop due to innovations and the creation of non-mass categories of canned products, experts believe the Center for Industry Expertise (CEE) of Rosselkhozbank and the V. M. Gorbatov National Center of Food Systems (FNTS Gorbatov).

 

According to Rosstat, production of canned meat in Russia in 2020 increased in annual terms to 736.3 million conditional cans (by more than 10%). Consumption of canned meat showed the same dynamics last year (an average of five cans per capita).

 

Since 2015, there has been a steady growth in production at an average rate of 10% per year, which may be explained by improved supply to the armed forces and the growth of Rosrezerv's reserves. In 2020, an emotional surge in demand was added to this with the beginning of self-isolation," said Rosselkhozbank's head of COE Andrei Dalnov.

 

The leaders in stew production last year were Kaliningrad region (114.4 cubic meters - 15.2% of the total volume), Moscow region (105.4 cubic meters - 14.3%) and Orel region (72 cubic meters - 9.8%). At the end of 2020, the top 10 producing regions account for up to 75% of the total production.

 

According to Dalnov, high competition in the animal protein market in the future, primarily from chilled meat, may affect the growth rate of demand for canned products. But investment in new non-mass categories of canned products and innovation in the canning industry could support demand.

 

According to the "Production of Russia" website, the leader of meat production in the Novosibirsk region is JSC Karasuk meat processing plant. It was founded in 1937, specializes in the production of meat and meat products. Annually produces 7 tons of meat, 2.5 thousand tons of sausages, 180 tons of edible fat, 350 tubes of canned food, 330 tons of semi-finished products, as well as, 450 tons of dry animal feed. The assortment includes four kinds of meat; 145 kinds of sausages, smoked meats and delicatessen products; 64 kinds of semi-finished products; 19 kinds of canned meat. The meat processing plant is actively working to expand its markets to other regions of the Russian Federation.
