
CHINA was the largest market, with lamb exports to that market up 30% over the year to 67,763 tonnes and mutton exports up 70% to 97,481 tonnes. China accounted for just over half of additional lamb exports for the year, with a total lamb market share of 31%.
Outside of China, the biggest growth was seen in exports to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region – the second largest lamb EXPORT market this year. After a relatively weak 2022, lamb exports to the region rose 63% to 95,889 tonnes. Exports increased to all major importing countries across the region. Lamb exports were particularly strong, rising 84% to 37,373 tonnes.
Australian beef exports rose 27% to 1.08 million tonnes in 2023, the highest since 2019. About half of this increase came from the United States, where exports increased 84% over last year.
