U.S. regulator allows first sales of lab-grown meat

Once approved, the United States will become the second country after Singapore to allow the sale of so-called cultured MEAT, derived from lab-grown livestock cell samples.

These companies were the first to complete the multi - stage cultured meat approval process in the US . The US Food and Drug Administration has already determined that meat is safe to eat.

“It's a dream come true,” Uma Valeti, CEO of Upside, said in an interview . “This marks a new era.”

Companies that produce cultured chicken plan to serve their products to high-end restaurants first and then scale up production to lower the cost of the product to grocery stores.

The cultured chicken will first be served at Bar Crenn, a San Francisco restaurant owned by chef Dominic Crenn, the company said. Good Meat will sell its first batch of chicken to the José Andrés Group, owned by a humanitarian and chef, Good Meat said.

The companies said they are still determining the exact time frame for when the products will go on sale.
