African swine fever wiped out the population of wild boars in Burgas

African swine fever has wiped out almost the entire population of wild boars in the forests around the largest city in Southeast Bulgaria.

Since the beginning of the year, local hunters have not managed to get a single trophy wild boar. To return with prey, they have to go to the north of the country. Nevertheless, fans of sport hunting hope that the population in Burgas will quickly recover, which is typical for this species of animals.

The first outbreak of ASF in Bulgaria was registered in September 2018 in the Varna region. In 2019-2020, due to outbreaks of African swine fever, pork production in the country dropped sharply. At the end of May 2021, 17 dead boars were found in the Yantra River in the Burgas region.
