June 3,
MINSK . In the Vitebsk region, a girl helped save a drowning friend, but ended up drowning herself. The details were reported to BELTA by the press service of the Investigative Committee.
In the first days of summer, warm weather in Belarus brought with
it a series of tragedies. Eight people drowned in three days, six of them in the Vitebsk region.
“If we analyze the incidents over these days, we can say that the majority of those who drowned were
men aged 30 to 75 years. But among the dead there is also a former medical college student who, together with her friends, came to the bank of the Western Dvina to meet the first summer dawn,” investigators said.
According to the investigation, on the afternoon of May 31, a group of guys aged 20 to 21 came to relax in nature, taking with them
ALCOHOL , which played its fatal role. During the day the youth drank and swam. Towards nightfall, already quite drunk, one of the girls began to drown, and her friends rushed to her aid. The young people rescued the drowning woman, but after that they discovered that a 21-year-old resident of Vitebsk, who was helping her friend get out of the water, had disappeared. The frightened guys called the rescuers. The girl's body was removed from the water by
emergency workers .
“An investigative team worked at the scene of the incident. It was established that the place where the guys were resting and swimming was not intended for swimming,” the Investigative Committee explained.
The Vitebsk city department of the Investigative Committee is looking into the incident in detail as part of the investigation. Investigators will pay special attention to the causes and conditions that contributed to the girl’s death.
Investigators also remind people to practice safe swimming practices. In particular, you can only swim in permitted places. You cannot swim behind buoys, dive in unfamiliar places, enter the water while intoxicated, or let children swim alone. It is also necessary to avoid swimming in wetlands, near steep cliffs and in bad weather.
