The measure will initially be applied on a six-month trial basis. During this period, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be permitted in the country from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. After six months, the country will evaluate the economic and social impact. Based on the results, a decision will be made on whether to extend or lift the ban in the future.

However, as specified in the statement, the current ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages from midnight to 11:00 AM will remain in effect. A relaxation will be made for bars and restaurants, where patrons will be able to consumeAlcohol sales may be continued for an additional hour (until 1:00 a.m.) after sales have ceased. These restrictions do not apply to alcohol sales in international airport terminals for departing and arriving passengers, as well as in licensed entertainment venues and some hotels.

In March, the House of Representatives of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Thailand approved a bill abolishing the special alcohol sales regime. Alcohol sales restrictions were introduced in Thailand in 1972 to prevent drinking in the workplace during the day.

The abolition of the alcohol sales schedule was proposed in 2024 by then-Prime Minister Settha Thaweesin after a meeting with representatives of the restaurant industry. Restauranteurs complained of rising operating costs and food prices.

With this change, the country's authorities intend to promote economic activity and improve tourist appeal.
