21 January, Grodno. In Lida,
Emergencies Ministry workers carried a man and a woman injured from a burning house, BelTA learned from the Grodno Regional Department of the Emergencies Ministry.
On the evening of 20 January, an eyewitness told Lida rescuers that a two-apartment residential building on Pavlika Morozova Street in the regional center was on fire. Four fire crews immediately went to the scene.
Upon arrival, Emergencies Ministry workers found a blazing fire in one of the apartments,
with flames spilling out onto the roof. As
it turned out, a 58-year-old pensioner lived in this home, and the second apartment was empty. The fire victim told rescuers that she was awakened by the smell of burning. Upon waking up, she immediately went outside, but there were guests inside the burning building: a 31-year-old acquaintance and her 42-year-old friend. Rescuers found an unconscious man on the bed in the living room, and a woman behind the closet. The Emergencies Ministry workers carried them out into the fresh air and handed them over to an ambulance team. The rescued people were hospitalized in serious condition.
The fire has been extinguished. The roof, ceiling, walls, floor and property in the burning apartment were damaged by the fire. The second apartment was not damaged. Most likely, the fire was caused by careless handling of fire while smoking.
According to the Emergencies Ministry, last year in the Grodno region careless smoking caused 135 fires, in which 35 people died. At the same time, 28 of them were in a state of
alcohol intoxication . As statistics show, the disastrous chain of "drank-lit a cigarette-fell asleep" almost always has a tragic ending.
