Per capita fruit and berry production in the Chuvash Republic is steadily increasing. According to Chuvashstat, the average yield over the three years was 37 kg per person in 2021-2023, 33 kg in 2018-2020, 19 kg in 2015-2017 (a significant decline due to unfavorable weather conditions in 2017), 23 kg in 2012-2014, and 13 kg in 2008-2011.
Data for 2010 was excluded from the latest period due to abnormally hot weather throughout the Volga Federal District. These results were shared by the Chuvashia branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Agroanalytics Center."
According to Rosstat data for 2023, pome fruits (apples and pears) predominate in the overall structure of regional fruit and berry crop acreage, accounting for 40.8%, followed by berries (strawberries, currants, raspberries) at 31.1%, and stone fruits (cherries, plums) at 27.9%.
The organized sector (agricultural organizations, peasant farms) in the republic is most interested in berry growing, according to the Chuvashia branch of the Agroanalytics Center. Such farms account for 36.6%, or approximately 360 hectares, of the area planted with berries. Of this, 79 hectares are owned by peasant farms. The organized sector accounts for 27.7% of the pome crop area, or 358.26 hectares, of which 43 hectares belong to peasant farms. Stone fruits and nuts are grown primarily on private farms—97% and 100%, respectively.
Berry growers in the republic receive several types of support: subsidies for the establishment and maintenance of perennial plantings, which reimburse up to 80% of incurred costs; an "Agrostartup" grant for agribusiness start-ups, ranging from 4 to 5 million rubles—more funding is provided to farmers who are part of a cooperative; and a republican "Perspective" grant for promising areas of activity, including berry growing, with funding of up to 5 million rubles.
On June 5, at a meeting with the heads of municipal districts,Analyzing the progress of spring sowing, Sergei Artamonov, Minister of Agriculture of the Chuvashia Republic, noted the negative impact of recurrent frosts on berry crops. The Minister instructed the heads of the regions to promptly report on the situation in the fields so that measures to support farmers can be adopted promptly.
A meeting with berry growers was previously organized at the beginning of this year. At the meeting, farmers and nursery managers presented proposals for improving the effectiveness of state support measures, such as including specialized equipment in the subsidy list. A number of measures were already considered at the Public Council of the Chuvash Ministry of Agriculture at the end of May. They will be further discussed by the State Council and the republican government. According to the Chuvash Ministry of Agriculture, 31 farmers received berry farming grants totaling approximately 152 million rubles
in 2021-2023 . To develop theoretical and practical skills in berry growers, this program was included in three of the five cohorts of the "Farmer's School" held at the Chuvashia State Agrarian University (in 2020, 2022, and 2023). Chuvashia berry growers have also formed professional communities on social media, based on their respective fields. There, they share new approaches to their work, news, achievements, and other professional information. Another event in this field was the berry festival, organized with the participation of the Chuvash Ministry of Agriculture. it was held for the first time last year. The event brought together berry farmers and introduced consumers to domestic produce. "Our market is large; we don't feel like competitors, but rather like a close-knit team working toward a common goal," berry growers shared their impressions at the first berry festival in 2023. This year, the berry festival in Chuvashia is planned to be held over two days: July 20 and 21, divided into festive events (on the first day) and a business program (on the second day).
