Farmers in the region have begun harvesting lentils, one of the most valuable and sought-after legumes.
Lentils are not only a source of high-quality vegetable protein but also a valuable dietary product rich in vitamins. Like all legumes, lentils naturally enrich the soil with nitrogen, improving its fertility and structure, which is crucial for crop rotation.
This year, 5,000 hectares of land in Stavropol Krai have been allocated to lentils, three times higher than last year. This demonstrates the growing interest of local farmers in this crop. The largest sown areas are in the Budyonnovsky, Sovetsky, and Krasnogvardeisky districts.
To date, approximately 7,700 tons of lentils have been harvested from an area of 3,500 hectares, with an average yield of 22.1 centners per hectare.
Stavropol Governor Vladimir Vladimirov notes that import substitution, including in seed production, is a key priority in agriculture.
"We actively encourage our farmers to use domestically bred varieties. We showcase new lentil varieties at seminars and meetings," noted Elena Tambovtseva, First Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Stavropol Territory.
