Russian-bred seeds are confidently displacing foreign ones in the Saratov market, said the Deputy Chairman of the Regional Government –Roman Kovalsky, the regional Minister of Agriculture, spoke at a plenary session held as part of the business program of the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Vavilov Readings 2025." "Currently, domestically produced seeds account for 90% of the grain group, including 50% from Saratov," the deputy chairman explained.
According to Kovalsky, work on accelerating the transformation of Russian breeding is being carried out at the direction of President Vladimir Putin as part of the national project "Technological Support for Food Security," one of the key components of which is increasing the share of domestically bred seeds to 75% by 2030. The Russian Ministry of Agriculture is already taking concrete steps in this direction: while the seed self-sufficiency rate was 60% in 2022, it will approach 70% by the end of 2025.
The Vavilov Readings are being held at Vavilov University. It was at this university 105 years ago that the eminent geneticist Nikolai Vavilov formulated the law of homologous series of hereditary variability. This law laid the foundation for many key areas in breeding and genetics that still influence modern science.
This year, the Vavilov Readings, held since 1970, brought together over 200 representatives from RUSSIA and neighboring countries. The conference includes six sections discussing a wide range of topics—from the challenges and achievements of modern genetics and the application of cutting-edge agricultural technologies for growing field crops to the digitalization of agriculture and regional development. The international Vavilov Olympiad
will be held on the final day of the conference, November 28 .
