This week, producers of the southern region of the Russian Federation began shipping the first large batches of melons, according to EastFruit project analysts. According to the daily monitoring of the project, the sales season for these products started at least 10 days later than usual. Manufacturers explain the late start of the sales season by unfavorable weather conditions in spring, as well as cool and rainy weather in the first half of summer.

To date, producers sell melons at 27-37 rubles / kg ($ 0.36-0.50 / kg), which is on average 35% more expensive than the first batches of these melons last year. Key market players attribute this price difference to the fact that due to heavy rainfall in the spring, some farmers were forced to reseed gourds, and rains and low temperatures at night in the first half of summer significantly slowed down the ripening of melons. Therefore, today the supply of local melon on the market is quite limited, and the demand in this segment is estimated to be quite high.

At the same time, Russian producers do not exclude that at the beginning of August the prices for melons will begin to decline intensively, since the supply of this product from local farms on the market will increase significantly.
