
Farms near Moscow and large producers are starting to pick the first berries. The first mass harvest of strawberries is planned for the end of the week.
“This season, the region plans to harvest more than 1,400 tons of strawberries. This year, many farms have increased the area planted with berries. Thus, over 130,000 strawberry bushes have been planted on Moscow region farms this season. The local berry will appear on the shelves in a week and a half to two weeks, ”said Georgy Filimonov, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Moscow Region, who is in charge of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
In the Moscow region, more than 30 agricultural producers are engaged in the cultivation of berries in open and protected ground. Most of all berry farms are in the urban district of Kolomna.
In the urban district of Kashira, thanks to the greenhouses of the Agrokultura company, berries are picked all year round.
The largest enterprise in the Moscow region, which is engaged in the cultivation of strawberries in the open field, is Lenin State Farm. Today, the farm covers about 100 hectares. The collection volume reaches 60 tons per day. Local residents are also invited to pick berries every year.
Last year, more than 1,000 tons of Moscow region strawberries were harvested during the season. Raspberries, blackberries, currants are also grown in the region.
