Scientists of the Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (UrFARC of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) have registered a new potato variety "Argo" in the State Register of Breeding Achievements.
The new variety is characterized by early ripeness - the crop can be harvested already in early July, good yield - up to 50 tons per hectare (10-14 tubers per bush), excellent taste. Potato "Argo" has oval tubers weighing 100-150 grams, snow-white juicy pulp, dark red skin. Table variety, well stored, starch content 12-15%, protein 3%, vitamin C 22-25 mg.
“The Argo variety was created as part of the implementation of the integrated research plan “Potato growing” of the state subprogram “Development of selection and seed production of potatoes in the Russian Federation”. This is another step in addressing the issue of ensuring the country's food security. We set a goal to make a year-round closed cycle of seed potato production for import substitution and meeting the needs of Russian agricultural producers. Today, there are those interested in seed potatoes of the Ural selection even in Magadan. In total, the center has 28 active agreements. In 2021 alone, we sold 36 tons of original planting material. The developments of the Ural scientists are being introduced not only in the Urals, but also in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Primorye, the Chuvash Republic, and the Novosibirsk Region,” said Elena Shanina,
Variety "Argo" is resistant to potato cancer, potato nematode, late blight, common scab and viral diseases. The work on its creation lasted for a long 11 years, of which 3 years were spent on variety testing by the state commission. Experts checked the plant for all the declared characteristics: ripening, yield, resistance to diseases, size and taste of fruits, and many others, and recommended growing it in the 9th Ural region (Republic of Bashkortostan, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Orenburg regions)
The new Argo potato variety can be purchased at the Ural Research Institute of Agriculture (in the structure of the Ural Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) in the village of Istok (Sverdlovsk Region) this year - in the spring at the beginning of the gardening season.
