The variety of winter triticale "Sibard" was created by scientists of the Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (UrFARC UB RAS).
After the state testing and expert evaluation, the new variety will be entered into the State Register of Breeding Achievements and allowed for cultivation.
It is worth noting that triticale is the first artificially created grain crop obtained by crossing wheat with rye. It has no analogues in nature, it is promising for the production of animal feed and the production of starch, baking flour and malt. Products prepared from this grain crop have a high nutritional value, since the protein that is part of this plant has a high content of essential amino acids, namely valine, lysine, threonine, arginine, glycine and others. Triticale grain is not inferior to wheat grain in terms of the content of macro- and microelements. It contains a lot of copper, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, zinc, manganese and iron, as well as vitamins B9, B5, B1, PP and E.
Sibard triticale, bred by Ural breeders, is distinguished by high winter hardiness (overwintering of plants is about 90%) and resistance to snow mold - one of the most harmful diseases, due to which crop losses can reach 40-50% and even 100%. In addition, the new variety has a high biological potential and allows you to get grains of more than 5 tons per hectare. In the competitive test, Sibard showed a yield of up to 5.5 t/ha, which is 0.7 t/ha higher than the Bashkir short-stemmed standard. At the same time, the growing season of the new variety is shorter by 3-4 days.
“As you know, the global problem of our time is protein deficiency. Therefore, in terms of solving the problem of vegetable protein, of undoubted interest is triticale, which can accumulate 1-2% more protein in grain than wheat. Scientists have long been attracted by the idea, tempting in its practical significance, to combine in one plant the valuable properties of high quality wheat grain with high winter hardiness and unpretentiousness of rye. In Russia, the first varieties appeared in production in the late 70s of the last century. In the Urals, winter triticale began to be cultivated in 2004 on the initiative of N.N. Zezina,” said Galina Nikolaevna Potapova, the author of the variety, leading researcher at the Ural Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ph.D.
The variety of winter triticale "Sibard" was obtained by selecting short-stemmed plants with a large spike from the hybrid Sears 57 and Bard. Plant height 95-105 cm. Spike prismatic, 8-10 cm long, with short awns at the top. There are 45-50 grains in an ear, the weight of 1000 grains is 40-42 g. The content of crude protein is 13.2-15.6%, which is on average 1.5% higher than wheat, and 3.4% higher than rye. It can be grown in more than 20 regions of our country - from central Russia to Western Siberia.

The Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (UrFARC UB RAS) is a leading scientific institution developing fundamental principles and technologies in crop and animal husbandry to provide the population with high-quality food products through renewable natural resources and life support technologies, protecting human health and animals. Over the years, the structural divisions of the center have created and included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation more than 300 varieties of fruit, berry, agricultural, ornamental crops and potatoes, which are grown in different regions of Russia on a total area of more than 2 million hectares.
