The first varieties of cherries by Samara breeders included in the State Register received the tender names "Nyusha", "Olechka" and "Liza".
Promising varieties of stone fruit crops adapted to the climatic conditions of the region are being created by Samara scientists at the production site of the State Budgetary Institution of the Samara Region Research Institute "Zhigulevskie Sady". Currently, breeders are laying rootstocks of new rootstock forms. The demo site of the intensive garden, equipped with drip irrigation and mineral nutrition, presents 15 different varieties, 12 of which are undergoing production tests at enterprises in the Samara Region.
It was possible to equip the site thanks to grant funds. Within the framework of state import substitution and food security programs, selection and seed production have become priority areas of state support in the agro-industrial complex.
"Although cherries are not winter-hardy crops, they are successfully grown in our region. The fruits ripen in the first ten days of June and delight us until mid-July. In terms of taste, our varieties are not inferior to their southern counterparts,” says Anatoly Minin, a leading researcher in stone fruit breeding.
Last year, a demonstration plot of garden strawberries was laid out on the territory of Zhigulevskie Sady — about two thousand bushes of 12 varieties, mainly of foreign selection. Based on the results of the study , producers and gardeners will be given recommendations on their cultivation, explains leading researcher Maria Antipenko.
In parallel, work is underway on hybridization: at the beginning of flowering, varieties are crossed to obtain the best option for our area — frost-resistant, productive, with good taste and presentable appearance, transportable.
The Institute actively works with farms in municipal districts of the Samara Region. This year, in the Kinelsky District, for the first time, an industrial pear orchard will be laid out on an area of 60 hectares, of which 15 hectares are of the Institute’s selection. The first hectare of the pear variety "Marshal Zhukov" will appear in the Koshkinsky district. In the Stavropolsky district, new apple varieties bred by the institute will be planted on an area of 10 hectares.
