Specialists of the Stavropol branch of the Russian Agricultural Center inspected corn seed crops

The Stavropol Territory is among the top three regions of RUSSIA growing corn, both in terms of sown area and gross yield: in 2022, in a number of districts of the Stavropol Territory, the corn yield was more than 100 centners per hectare. A high yield of grain and green mass is ensured by compliance with the requirements of agricultural technology and the use of high-quality seeds of productive hybrids included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements approved for use in the Russian Federation.

During the growing season in the areas of hybridization, it is necessary to carry out work aimed at growing high-quality seeds. To determine the completeness of the sterility of maize maternal rows, as well as the quality of panicle breakage of maternal forms of hybrids grown on a fertile basis, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation recommended one preliminary and three field surveys.

Specialists of the branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Rosselkhoztsentr" in the Stavropol Territory strictly adhere to this methodology and systematically conduct surveys of corn seed crops. A preliminary examination is performed 10-15 days before the start of flowering of corn panicles in the areas of hybridization of all types of hybrids. Documents are checked for sown seeds, compliance with spatial isolation, typicality of plants, correct alternation of maternal and paternal rows. The developmental phase of the maternal and paternal plants is determined to ensure that the flowering of the maternal and paternal rows matches. The first field survey on seed plots is carried out at the beginning of the flowering ears, when no more than 5% of plants with flowering ears are found; the second is during the period

The next survey of corn seed crops was carried out in the Izobilnensky district in the areas of corn hybridization.

“At the sites of hybridization of corn seed crops, field surveys are carried out to check the quality of panicle breakage and the completeness of sterility,” said Alexei Ivanov, HEAD of the seed production department of the Stavropol branch of the Rosselkhozcenter. - Compliance with spatial isolation is also checked, which should be at least 300 m. 10-15 days before the start of corn flowering, hybridization sites are pre-examined and determine how correctly hybrid seeds are grown (whether the alternation of rows of parental forms is observed, spatial isolation, whether varietal contamination). All surveyed areas of hybridization meet the necessary requirements for growing corn seeds.
