As part of the AgroExpedition “Agriculture of Kazakhstan,” we visited the Suleimenov peasant farm, which actively cooperates with the country’s leading scientific research institutes.
One of the areas of the farm’s work is crossing Edilbaevskaya sheep with the best foreign MEAT breeds. For these purposes, the Research Institute of Sheep Breeding named after K.U. Medeubekov imported stud rams of nine breeds, which are used in experiments on various farms in Kazakhstan. A cross Dorper and Edilbaevskaya breed
ram has a small tail, a wide back, a wide chest, fleshy thighs, stronghooves and slight humped nose. it is larger than the Dorper. The weight of a ram at 18 months is 104 kg.
The ram cross Ile-de-France and the queen of the Edilbaev breed has a white color, strong legs and a complete absence of fat tail. The meat form is inferior to the purebred Ile-de-France. The large and elongated body constitution, woolly back and long legs were passed on from the Edilbay.
A cross between a Merinoland and a queen of the Edilbaev breed has small ears, high legs, strong bones and the absence of a fat tail. The live weight of the cross is 109 kg at 18 months.
The cross between the Charolais and the Edilbaevskaya breed has a brown color, a high and large hindquarters, wide bones and fullness of the thighs, a wide back, strong legs, an elongated body, and wide withers. The weight of this ram at 18 months is 86 kg.
The cross between the Zvartbles and the Edilbaevskaya breed is characterized by increased fertility. Due to their high MILK production, they can feed twins and even triplets. Live weight can reach 120-140 kg. The wool of the cross is of high quality, semi-fine fleece. Weight at 18 months is 96 kg.
Experiments on crossing sheep of the Edilbaev breed with rams of foreign breeds have been carried out on the farm for several years. Test results show that the crossbreeds have good productive qualities. They are larger and meatier than purebred Edilbays, while remaining resistant to harsh local conditions.
According to the candidate of agricultural sciences, HEAD of the Sheep Breeding Technology Department of the K.U. Medeubekov Research Institute of Sheep Breeding, Zhanat Tuleubekovich Kasenov, the most promising areas in sheep selection are:
- Improving the meat qualities of the Edilbayev breed;
- Increasing the fertility of local breeds;
- Breeding new breeds that combine the best qualities of local and foreign breeds.
