PIONERPRODUKT.by continues publishing videos from the AgroExpedition "Agriculture of Tajikistan." This time, we're on the northern slope of the Hissar Range in the Fann Mountains, on the shores of Lake Iskanderkul. Yaks are grazing here. I photographed yaks in this area back in 1987, when I was a student. This photo is included in the video. Of course, back then, I couldn't have imagined that 37 years later, I'd be in these same places, talking with scientists about yak herding and filming the descendants of those yaks!

Yak breeding in Tajikistan is an important branch of livestock farming, especially in high-altitude regions such as the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region and Ayni District. Yaks' adaptation to the harsh conditions of the highlands allows for the production of environmentally friendly MEAT, MILK, and wool. The cold mountain climate and harsh conditions are ideal for these hardy animals. Yaks occupy an ecological niche unavailable to other species, such as cows and horses.
In summer, yaks can graze at altitudes exceeding three thousand meters; with the onset of winter, they descend lower.
Female yaks are ready to mate at two years of age.
A single bull can breed up to 15 female yaks.
The gestation period for female yaks is eight months.Yak calves are born weighing 17-18 kilograms, so calving is easy and requires no human assistance. Calving begins in March and ends in August.
At three months, a yak calf weighs 30-32 kilograms.
At six months, yaks weigh 60-65 kilograms.
At eighteen months, yaks weigh around 150 kilograms.
And at thirty months, yaks weigh up to 350 kilograms.
Young yaks typically nurse from their mothers until they are 18 months old.
Breed yaks, eat yak meat , drink yak milk , and use their warm, soft, and thick wool to make clothing! Yaks to all!
