Chuvashia became the leader in potato production in the Volga Federal District per 100 hectares of agricultural land

This is evidenced by a joint analytical study by Rosselkhozbank and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Chuvash Republic, timed to coincide with the Potato-2024 exhibition in Cheboksary, which is held from February 29 to March 1. Chuvashia is the most compact region of the Volga Federal District, with 938 thousand hectares of agricultural land. Of these, 17.7 thousand hectares were allocated for potatoes
in 2023 , from which the region's farmers harvested 338.1 thousand tons of the "second bread". Per 100 hectares of agricultural land, the republic produces the most potatoes in the Volga Federal District, according to an analytical study by Rosselkhozbank and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Chuvash Republic. "The industry interregional exhibition "Potato" is being held in Chuvashia for the 16th time. And this, as you can see from the achievements, is no coincidence. The result is achieved thanks to regional measures of state support for technical modernization, technologies applied in the fields. And we are ready to share this experience, because food security is a common cause of the entire agricultural community of the country," the Deputy Prime Minister noted.

"Potato growing is a traditional industry for Chuvashia, but in recent years, thanks to regional support measures, there has been a significant upgrade of technologies and equipment. The crop was cultivated by 217 farms in 20 municipalities of the republic. The largest areas are in Komsomolsky (767 hectares or 14.8% of the total planting area in the republic), Batyrevsky (761 hectares or 14.7%), and Kozlovsky (546 hectares or 10.5%) districts. At the same time, farmers give preference to the domestic product. In 2023, agricultural producers of the republic planted 38 varieties of potatoes. Most of them are of Russian (19 varieties) and German (11) selection. "4 varieties come from the Netherlands, 3 from Great Britain , 1 is French," commented Irina Pismenskaya, DIRECTOR
of the Chuvashia Branch of Rosselkhozbank. The Slava Kartofelyu agricultural firm is a leader in the application of innovative technologies in potato production in the republic. The agricultural organization is participating in the comprehensive scientific and technical project "Development of potato seed production and creation of a competitive seed fund of promising domestic potato varieties in the conditions of the Volga Federal District." New domestic potato varieties are grown here - Gulliver, Meteor, Samba, Krasa Meshchery, Flame.
During the project implementation in 2023, 13.7 thousand micro plants, 65 thousand mini-tubers, 10.8 tons of the 1st field generation, 101.6 tons of super-super elite, 451.3 tons of super elite and 686 tons of elite seed material of promising domestic varieties were obtained.
"In recent years, thanks to regional support measures, there has been a significant update of technologies and equipment. Our farmers began to develop their own processing industries, an example of which is the investment project for the production of the first Chuvash chips implemented last year with the support of the Russian Agricultural Bank. Movement in this direction can undoubtedly help the republic get an even greater economic effect from growing the "second bread", "the study says.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture of Chuvashia Sergei Artamonov reported that in terms of MILK and vegetable production per 100 hectares of agricultural land, the region is in second place in the Volga Federal District, and in fourth place in terms of MEAT and grain.
