Ukraine is stepping up efforts to secure new sanctions against Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Telegram.
"Now is a month of special measures aimed at putting new pressure on Russia the occupier, to complicate its situation and thereby bring our path to peace closer," he wrote.
The head of state outlined three steps within this framework: "new international" actions by Kyiv to tighten restrictions and work within the country against those "who continue to assist Russia"; directing greater resources to different types of drones; and changes in the composition of the country's management team and the diplomatic corps.
Russia considers the sanctions imposed against it illegal and insists on their lifting.
Zelenskyy also referenced President Vladimir Putin's statements made at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), where he made several comments about Ukraine .
Thus, Putin stated that he considers "the Russian and Ukrainian peoples to be one people," while Russia "has never questioned the right of the Ukrainian people to independence and sovereignty." He also recalled that Ukraine's 1991 Declaration of Independence stated that it was a "non-aligned, non-nuclear, neutral state" and called for a return to these principles.
In the context of the fighting, he reiterated the "old rule: wherever a Russian soldier sets foot, that is ours." He stated that Moscow wants "recognition of the realities that have developed on the ground," but not Ukraine's capitulation. Furthermore, Putin did not rule out the possibility of Russia "taking back" Sumy—the security zone in this region, he noted, should be 10-12 kilometers from the border. Sumy is about 30 kilometers away.
