Zakharova spoke of a crisis in France's democracy amid Lecornu's appointment

A total crisis of democracy has begun in France , stated Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova , commenting on the reappointment of Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister of France.

According to Zakharova, Paris is ignoring the opinions of its citizens, and the very act of bringing back Lecornu, who resigned less than a week ago, looks like political desperation. "Against the backdrop of political repression in France, this act of desperation signals a total crisis of democracy—the opinion of the French people no longer counts," Zakharova wrote on her TELEGRAM channel.

The Élysée Palace announced Lecornu's reappointment as prime minister the evening of October 10. Lecornu had previously been appointed prime minister in September, but on the morning of October 6, he resigned just hours after presenting his cabinet. Following Macron's cabinet appointment, opposition parties were quick to react, calling it a "provocation" and a "pathetic choice."

France has been in a political crisis since Macron dissolved the National Assembly in July 2024 and called early parliamentary elections. Since Macron's reelection as president in 2022, the country has seen five heads of government. Amid mounting public debt, the cabinet is unable to agree on a budget for 2026.

Commenting on his reappointment, Lecornu said he would try to do everything possible to ensure France has a "budget for the end of the year."
