Japan has banned the export of five more categories of goods to Russia

The Japanese authorities have expanded the list of goods that are prohibited for export to Russia, since they can be used in the production of weapons, follows from a document published on the website of the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The updated list of products includes computer numerical control (CNC) machines and milling machines, communications and electronic (diodes, digital cameras, transistors, etc.) equipment, as well as goods for the production of electronic semiconductors.

Japan, together with Western countries, has been imposing sanctions against Russia since the start of the special operation in Ukraine . In 2023, Japanese authorities banned the export of steel, aluminum and products made from them to Russia, as well as aircraft, spacecraft and engines, drones, construction equipment, etc.

Tokyo also banned the import of vaccines, medical equipment, robots, radioactive materials, equipment for nuclear facilities, and oil and natural gas exploration into Russia.

Despite the sanctions, Japan continued to import goods from Russia, in particular liquefied natural gas (LNG).

On January 24 , 2024 , the Ministry of Finance of Japan reported that in December 2023 the country imported record volumes of LNG from Russia since 2017 - 833 thousand tons. In March 2023, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that the country intends to continue participating in oil and gas projects in Sakhalin, as they are important for energy security.
