The US White House is pressuring the Treasury to include Kaspersky Lab on the sanctions list, but they fear the consequences of such measures, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources.
According to the publication, the White House believes that the Kremlin can use the company's products to spy on its customers. The Treasury was instructed to prepare proposals for sanctions within the framework of American restrictions imposed against Russia because of Ukraine. However, some experts from among the employees of the department expressed doubts about the rationality of such a step, writes WSJ.
So, they pointed out that the products of Kaspersky Lab are used by "hundreds of millions" of users around the world, and this "makes it difficult to impose sanctions." In addition, some officials fear that restrictions against Kaspersky Lab will increase the likelihood of cyberattacks from Moscow, including using the company's software.
For now, the newspaper writes, Washington has shelved the idea of imposing restrictions on Kaspersky Lab.
