The White House is exploring the possibility of imposing sanctions on third parties in other states due to the unclear impact on the Russian economy of existing restrictions, the Washington Post (WP) reported, citing sources.
“White House officials are preparing a rare measure that will also punish third parties in other countries for interacting with parts of the Russian economy that have fallen under US sanctions,” four people familiar with the conversations in the administration, who wished to remain anonymous, say.
According to one WP source, the sanctions will aim to "make Russia radioactive for non-US, non-European businesses."
As the authors of the article noted, the United States is considering this option against the background of the escalation of the situation in Ukraine and "while the impact of existing sanctions on the Russian economy remains unclear." According to WP interlocutors, these steps are not inevitable and no final decision has yet been made on them.
