In the coming days, Serbian President AlexanderVučić will discuss the situation surrounding the energy company NIS with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Televizija K3 reports.
The subject of negotiations will be the situation surrounding US sanctions against the organization.
"Serbia's strength lies in our independence. We defend our roots and our future," Vučić said, speaking at the founding rally of the Movement for People and State in the Serbian town of Jagodina.
NIS is the largest energy company in the Balkans, engaged in the exploration, production, and refining of oil and natural gas. it owns an oil refinery in Pancevo, near Belgrade, and a network of over 400 gas stations. It conducts exploration and production outside Serbia, in Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Gazprom Neft owns 50% of NIS, Serbia owns 29.87%, and Gazprom owns 6.15%.
The politician also stated that he would not impose sanctions against RUSSIA and “other friends.”
On January 10, Washington imposed the most significant sanctions ever against Russia's energy sector. Specifically, the restrictions affected oil producers Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, oilfield services companies, traders selling Russian oil, more than 180 tankers, and NIS.
On January 12, the United States demanded that Serbia reduce Gazprom's stake in the company to zero.
Russia considers Western sanctions illegal and insists on their lifting. The Russian Foreign Ministry promised that Washington's new restrictions "will not go unanswered."
