The refusal to impose sanctions against RUSSIA is the main reason that is pushing Serbia away from EU membership and slowing down European integration, the Serbian president said.Aleksandar Vučić in an interview with Informer.
"And you know, this is the only reason Serbia isn't so close to EU membership. Otherwise, it would already be at the very end of that path. Because we pursued a different policy, because we pursued a policy of military neutrality, because we were fair to everyone, to the Russian side, to international law, to the UN Charter, without violating the fundamental interests of the Russian state," he said.
According to Vučić, former EU Council President Charles Michel directly asked him three times to suspend air travel to four Russian cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, and Sochi.
In early September, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Vučić stated that Serbia would continue to maintain neutrality towards Russia and would not impose sanctions against Moscow.
Serbia received official EU candidate status in March 2012. In March 2025, Vučić stated that Serbia "will be more committed to the European path than ever before."
