The UK will ban the import of coal and oil from Russia

Following gold, Russian oil was banned in the UKand coal

The UK will impose sanctions on the import of coal and oil from Russia, according to a notice to exporters distributed by the Kingdom's Foreign Trade Ministry.

“This amendment prohibits the import of oil and oil products, coal and gold, as well as the purchase, supply and delivery, directly or indirectly, of these goods. It also prohibits the provision of technical assistance, financial services, funds and intermediary services related to these goods,” the government said in a statement.

The British government has not yet published applications that should contain the exact codes for Russian products that will be banned from import into the country. In 2021, the UK imported $267 million worth of Russian coal and coal products, $1.4 billion worth of crude oil, $3 billion worth of oil products, and $15 billion worth of gold. If a full embargo is imposed on these goods, it will affect 80% of all British imports from Russia, which amounted to $24.9 billion in 2021.

The ban on oil imports from Russia will come into force on December 31, coal on August 10. In addition, today, July 21, a ban on the import of gold from Russia will come into force. The date of the introduction of sanctions against coal coincides with the start date of the restrictive measures established against Russian coal by the European Union.

Since the end of February, after Russia recognized the DPR and LPR and launched a military special operation in Ukraine, the UK has repeatedly tightened sanctions against Moscow. Representatives of the country's top leadership - President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, 386 State Duma deputies, a number of company executives, including the heads of Rosneft and Gazprom Igor Sechin and Alexei Miller, as well as some entrepreneurs, including which Peter Aven, Mikhail Fridman, German Khan, Vladimir Potanin. In addition, the sanctions affected organizations such as Alfa-Bank, Gazprombank, Sberbank, VTB, Aeroflot and Rostec.

Other European countries are also making decisions to cut off Russian energy resources. Thus, at the level of the European Union, sanctions have already been imposed on the supply of oil to the EU by sea - pipeline oil has so far been withdrawn from sanctions. Germany will completely stop buying Russian coal from August 1, and Russian oil from December 31 of this year, Deputy Finance Minister Jörg Kukis said.

The Russian authorities have repeatedly called restrictive measures by the West illegal. “The sanctions hysteria, in which London plays one of the leading, if not the main role, leaves us no choice but to respond with proportionate tough measures. Their result will undoubtedly be the undermining of British interests in Russia, ”said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
