Russian businessman Mikhail Gutseriev fell under new British sanctions against Belarus, according to the government website. London, a year after the election of the Belarusian president, announced a new package of economic sanctions against the republic.

In addition to Gutseriev, there are seven more names on the list, including President ALEXANDER LUKASHENKO and his son Viktor.

RBC sent a request to Mikhail Gutseriev, a representative of the Safmar group.

Gutseriev heads the board of directors of the Safmar group, and was also the chairman of the board of directors of the RussNeft oil and gas company, which supplies oil to Belarus. At the end of June, after being included in the EU sanctions list, the businessman left the board of directors of RussNeft.

British sanctions against Gutseriev are already their own initiative after leaving the EU, George Voloshin, DIRECTOR of the French branch of the consulting company Aperio Intelligence, told RBC. Everything that was in EU legislation on sanctions remains in British law, but all the decisions that are being made now are no longer carried out in coordination with continental Europe, he says. In other words, London could not impose these personal sanctions against Gutseriev after the European Union. “Still, the Gutseriev family has a lot of assets in London, and as the financial hub of Europe, the UK still plays a much larger role than, say, Paris, Geneva or Frankfurt,” Voloshin said.
