Earlier on April 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed sanctions on Russian cultural and sports figures, including 39-year-old Velikaya.
"Honestly, I didn't even expect to find myself in such stellar company: Nikolai Rastorguev, Alexander Rosenbaum, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, and other Russian talents—a very good elite club," Velikaya said.
According to the athlete, her athletic achievements "truly impress the Ukrainian government ." "I am proud to take my place on this honorable list, and I continue fencing and preparing for the next Olympics," Velikaya concluded.
Velikaya has won two gold and three silver medals at the Olympic Games and is an eight-time world champion.
