The United States imposed sanctions on Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova because she "is a high-ranking figure in the Russian government," not in the same way that State Department spokesman Ned Price was included on the Russian sanctions list. The latter stated this at a briefing, the broadcast is available on the YouTube channel of the State Department.

“She was under sanctions not because of any particular role, but because she is a high-ranking figure in the Russian government. We have imposed sanctions against a number of high-ranking figures in the Russian government, and a representative of the Foreign Ministry was included in the last round, ”Price said in response to a request to explain the reasons for imposing sanctions against Zakharova.

Journalists reminded the representative of the State Department that he himself, after being included in the Russian sanctions list, said that this measure meant nothing to him. In this regard, Price was asked what impact such measures would have on Zakharova. He replied that the introduction of a representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry was not “something personal” or a settling of scores. “We are persecuting those who are directly or indirectly involved in the aggression of the Russian authorities in Ukraine,” he added.

On June 2, the US Department of the Treasury added Zakharova to the sanctions list. The press release said the measure was being introduced “for her role as an official representative of the government of the Russian Federation,” and also mentioned that Australia, the UK, the EU, New Zealand and Japan had previously taken a similar decision.

Together with Zakharova, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko, Minister of Construction Irek Fayzullin, Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov, Minister of Transport Vitaly Savelyev, General DIRECTOR of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Yuri Slyusar and entrepreneur God Nisanov (Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company " Kyiv Square).

The restrictions also affected businessman Alexei Mordashov and his Severstal, Severgroup, which manages the rest of the entrepreneur's assets, as well as Nordgold, a controlling stake in which was previously transferred to Marina Mordashova. At the same time, the US Treasury issued general licenses: they can be used to conduct transactions with Severstal until August 31, with Nordgold - until July 1.
