Oreo and Milka are boycotted in Scandinavia because of Russia

Several dozen Scandinavian companies refused to work with the American confectionery manufacturer Mondelez International (the company owns such brands as Oreo, Mars Alpen Gold, Milka, Toblerone, Barny, Halls, Tuc and others) because of their refusal to leave the Russian market, REUTERS reports . .

According to the agency, the SAS and Norwegian Air airlines, the SJ railway group, the Strawberry hotel chain, the Elkjop retail chain, the Fjord Line shipping group, the Norwegian Football Association and others have joined the corporate boycott of Mondelez.

According to Reuters, the American corporation has a strong presence in Norway and Sweden through its local chocolate producers Freia and Marabou. Amid the boycott, the company turned to the Norwegian government on June 11 to protect its local business .

In May, Mondelez International was included in the Ukrainian list of "international war sponsors" for continuing to work in Russia, where the company owns three plants - the Bolshevik factory, a production facility in Pokrov, and a plant in Veliky Novgorod. At the end of 2022, Mondelez's profit in Russia amounted to $339 million, the company paid $61 million in taxes to the country's budget, Ukrainian authorities cited data .

As Reuters was told by some of the Scandinavian companies that announced a boycott of the manufacturer of sweets, their actions were dictated by the decision of the Ukrainian side. Mondelez then said that she would try to meet with the authorities of these countries to explain her position. “Mondelez International is complying with all policy decisions and sanctions and will continue to review necessary adjustments to operations to ensure full compliance,” the company added.
