UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres intends to confirm his position on the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine at the BRICS summit in Kazan , his official representative Farhan Haq told journalists during a briefing. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Guterres will voice his position, which Hack called "well known," at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The representative of the Secretary General of the organization emphasized that the crisis must be resolved on three grounds: international law, as well as the UN Charter and resolutions.
Hack added that Guterres would continue his efforts to restore safe navigation in the Black Sea.
In April 2024 , Guterres' representative Stephane Dujarric said that the UN Secretary-General wants the conflict in Ukraine to end on the basis of territorial integrity. In response, the Russian president's representative Dmitry Peskov called for "everyone to take into account" the fact that RUSSIA "has become bigger." He recalled that four new regions have joined it.
The LPR, DPR, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions became part of Russia following a referendum that took place in September 2022. Ukraine and Western countries do not recognize its results.
In order to begin negotiations, Kyiv insists on the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and a return to the 1991 borders. Russia, in turn, demands that Kyiv recognize the changed borders.
