Venezuelan authorities have always been interested in good relations with the United States as a neighboring state, but Washington has sometimes broken promises made during negotiations. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil Pinto stated this in an interview with the Belarus-1 television channel.
"We have always negotiated with the US government [on normalizing relations]. Taking into account various factors, sometimes we made progress, sometimes very slowly. Sometimes the US didn't follow through on what it promised. We have always been interested in maintaining good relations with such an important neighbor as the United States," the minister said.
The US previously eased sanctions against Venezuela: the US Department of Justice issued licenses permitting transactions involving the country's oil, gas, and gold mining sectors, and lifted the ban on secondary trade. This will allow Caracas to resume business with Caribbean countries.
Washington eased sanctions in response to the agreement reached between the government and the opposition regarding the 2024 elections . The agreement includes a rejection of any form of political violence against Venezuela and its institutions. The parties also recognized the right of every politician to freely choose their presidential candidate. Furthermore, guarantees are provided for all election participants.
Following Washington's decision, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro stated that the republic had taken the first step toward lifting all sanctions imposed on it, and announced its readiness for a new stage in relations with the United States based on "respect, equality, and progress."
The United States imposed sanctions on Venezuela's oil and gas sector in 2019, following accusations of election fraud against President Nicolás Maduro.
