In Lithuania, on the evening of March 11, a car with Russian license plates was detained while trying to leave for Belarus, customs reported . An administrative report was drawn up against the driver; he is not the owner of the car. The car may be confiscated

On the evening of March 11, an Audi Q7 with Russian license plates was detained at the Lithuanian border checkpoint Medininkai while trying to leave for Belarus, Lithuanian customs reported.

The driver was a Moldovan citizen, but according to the documents, the car belongs to a Russian citizen, the department said. The driver was explained that cars with Russian registration are subject to confiscation in Lithuania from March 11, with the exception of transit to or from the Kaliningrad region - in this case, the car can stay in Lithuania for no more than 24 hours, and its owner must be in the car.

Violations are subject to fines and possible confiscation of the vehicle.

“An administrative violation report was drawn up against the driver of the Audi Q7, who claimed that he knew nothing about the restrictions introduced. The car, worth €41,690, was detained,” the publication says.

At the beginning of March, Vilnius warned that from March 11, cars with Russian license plates would begin to be confiscated from Lithuania, calling on them to either re-register them or leave the country. The Lithuanian authorities explained these measures by the implementation of EU sanctions against RUSSIA. According to the explanations of the European Commission, entry into the EU countries in passenger cars with Russian license plates is equivalent to prohibited import.

The Russian Foreign Ministry promised to respond to the confiscation of cars with Russian license plates in Lithuania, assessing such measures as “a gross act of robbery at the state level.”
