The Russian payment system Mir will soon be launched in Iran, there are agreements on this matter, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari told RIA Novosti.
“I think that this payment system [Mir] will soon be activated in Iran. However, at the moment I don’t know if it can be used in Iran or not, but there is an agreement on this matter,” Safari said.
ATMs in Cuba started accepting Mir cards
The national payment card system — the card operator of the Russian Mir system — was created in 2014, after Western sanctions in response to the entry of troops into Crimea and its annexation. The Central Bank implemented a system in case of disconnection of cards of international payment systems.
According to the website of the payment system, Mir cards can now be fully used in Turkey, Vietnam, Armenia, SOUTH KOREA, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
On July 26, the Association of Tour Operators of RUSSIA (ATOR) also reported that Mir cards began to be accepted by ATMs in Cuba. At least four more countries have said they are considering using Mir on their territory - these are Myanmar, Nigeria, Bahrain, and Thailand. In April, the Central Bank of Russia indicated that, in addition to Cuba, negotiations were underway with two more countries regarding the Mir cards, but it remained unknown which countries they were.
