The completion of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will be the most "terrible" sanction against the United States . Alexander Sherin, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, stated this in an interview with the radio station "Moscow speaking".

“The most terrible economic and geopolitical sanction against the United States is when RUSSIA completes Nord Stream 2, when we get an alternative gas supply channel to Europe, even twice as much as today through Ukraine,” Sherin said.

In his opinion, after that, Kyiv will no longer “blackmail” Europe with interruptions in the supply of Russian gas, and Moscow will be able to dictate “any conditions” to Washington. This will lead to the fact that the United States will be forced to unilaterally lift the sanctions previously imposed on Russia, due to fears of losing "control over European countries."

The Nord Stream 2 project provides for the construction of two branches of the gas pipeline along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The length of each branch is 1.2 thousand km. The total capacity is 55 billion cubic meters. m per year. The gas pipeline will pass through the water areas of Russia, Germany, Finland, Denmark and Sweden. The pipeline was planned to be completed at the end of 2019, but construction was suspended due to US sanctions.
