The European Union does not plan to impose sanctions on Hungary and Slovakia for purchasing Russian oil , EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Representative Kaja Kallas said in an interview with Sky News.
Kallas noted that countries continue to buy energy resources from RUSSIA because they are cheap, but added that they should still find other suppliers.
"No, there's no talk of sanctions. But they can find alternative [suppliers] to get rid of Russian oil and gas. <...> The neighbors of these countries have also proposed an alternative. But the point is that“Oil and gas [from Russia] are simply cheaper,” she said ( quoted by TASS ).
On September 23, at the UN General Assembly, US President Donald Trump announced his readiness to impose serious sanctions against Moscow if all EU countries stop purchasing Russian oil.
Russia considers Western sanctions illegal. The Kremlin has called pressure on Moscow futile.
In September, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest would not abandon Russian energy purchases, even if Trump made such a demand. In May, he announced that Hungary, along with Slovakia, would oppose the European Commission's plan to wean EU countries off Russian gas.
