The European Union will respond with a united front to the recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, if Russia decides to do so. This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and EU Security Policy Josep Borrell.

“We think that the final decision (on the recognition of the DPR and LPR.) has not yet been made, and we call on President [Vladimir] Putin to respect international law. We expect him not to recognize the independence of the DNR and LNR. We are ready to respond to this with a strong united front in case he decides to do so,” Borrell said at a press conference in Brussels.

According to him, the EU will turn to member countries with a request to impose sanctions against Russia if Moscow recognizes the republics. “If there is an annexation, then sanctions will follow, and if there is recognition, then I will propose sanctions and ask the ministers to consider them,” Borrell said.

The head of European diplomacy believes that Europe is now going through a critical moment in terms of security.
