The EU named three key elements of the new agenda for relations with Turkey

An EU delegation visited Ankara to find a solution to the problems hindering normal cooperation with Turkey. European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen announced a new impetus in relations

A positive agenda for relations between the EU and Turkey should be based on three elements - economic cooperation, migration issues and people-to-people contacts. This was announced on April 6 by the HEAD of the European Council, Charles Michel, after negotiations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to Michel, the main purpose of the visit to Ankara was to look for an opportunity to restart relations with the Turkish leadership. “We hope that Turkey will take advantage of this,” Michel said and noted that relations between Turkey and the EU have warmed somewhat over the past few months.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who participated in the talks, also said that the Turkish leadership is set to improve relations. Von der Leyen suggested focusing on strengthening economic ties, fighting for a better climate, and harmonizing migration policies. The head of the European Commission also called on Turkey to respect human rights. Von der Leyen, in particular, recalled that the European COURT of Human Rights appealed to Ankara with a recommendation to release businessman and human rights activist Mehmet Osman Kavala from detention.
